Online collection databases are a means of discovering the knowledge oftentimes\ud hidden within a museum???s collection record and making that knowledge available to the\ud public for whom museums hold their collections in trust. This thesis examines the\ud contemporary implementation, maintenance history, staffing requirements, and historical\ud use of online museum collections through an exploration of the literature and the\ud evaluation of three case study museums: the San Francisco Museum of Modem Art, the\ud Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, and the de Young Museum.
