Lateral loads on flexible diaphragms

Includes bibliographical references (pages 88-90)Lateral loads have repeatedly been a great concern for\ud design engineers, which in turn have necessitated for more\ud research and tests in finding the reaction and performance of\ud wood sheathed diaphragms under later loads.\ud This project report summarizes current analysis, details\ud and design practices for wood sheathed diaphragms that functions\ud as part of the lateral force resisting system of a\ud structure. It discusses about subjects which include: Analogies\ud and procedures used to determine stresses and deflections,\ud Concepts involved in determining the lateral forces\ud acting on the diaphragm, Design details to transfer forces to\ud and from the diaphragm, Guidance on selection of materials and\ud construction procedures, Limitations of current practice and\ud design example, Research needs required to improve the state-of-\ud the-art.\ud Chapter 1 covers concepts involved in determining the\ud lateral forces acting on the diaphragm. Chapter 2 deals with\ud analogies and procedures used to determine the stresses and\ud deflections associated with diaphragm design. Chapter 3 analyzes\ud details used to transfer forces into the diaphragm and\ud forces from the diaphragm to the vertical reaction components.\ud Chapter 4 provides some materials and construction procedures\ud for obtaining the desired performance from wood sheathed\ud diaphragms. Chapter 5 discusses the design criteria involved\ud in wood-sheathed diaphragms. A design example is presented in\ud which vertical and lateral load resisting elements are\ud designed for. Chapter 6 discusses some of the research needed\ud to improve the design and performance of horizontal wood\ud sheathed diaphragms used in building construction.\ud The Selected Bibliography in Chapter 7 provides the background\ud leading to the present state-of-the-art and to the use\ud of horizontal wood-sheathed diaphragms.\ud Appendix A shows the derivation for plywood diaphragm\ud deflection formula. Appendix B presents reference tables and\ud charts
