Undergraduate Business Programs Annual Assessment Report to the College 2013-2014

Describes the Undergraduate Business Program's assessment activities for the academic year 2013-2014.The annual assessment report for the undergraduate business programs (departments of Finance, Financial Planning, and Insurance; Management; Marketing; Systems and Operations Management; Business Law; and Accounting and Information Systems) report to the College for the Office of Academic Assessment. Adopting a newly devised assessment cycle, the undergraduate business program assessed one SLO Group (Group 2, with four different SLOs) and performed program review on one SLO Group (Group 1, with four different SLOs). Direct assessment instruments used to assess SLO Group 2 included multiple-choice exam questions, case analysis papers (scored by an independent scorer in a new assessment practice as opposed to having course instructors conduct subjective assessment evaluations), and peer evaluation of teamwork skills while performing case analyses and business simulations. All results, gleaned from numerous course sections and hundreds of students, easily met the program???s benchmark of 70% of students with good enough or very good performance or of 85% passing rate on six Lower Division Core (LDC) examinations, with ???the possible exception of statistics??? (a LDC exam) which was slightly below the benchmark of 85% passing rate. Performance on the statistics, management accounting, and microeconomics components of the LDC exam is reported as satisfactory but in need of future monitoring, while performance on the subjects of business law, macroeconomics, and financial accounting is reported as satisfactory. The business program also streamlined its assessment process in 2013-14 by reducing its number of SLOs from nine to seven (via mergers of redundant SLOs) and staggered its assessment schedule to assess one group of SLOs each year and subject another group to program review. New rubrics were also tested to assess three Group 1 SLOs (including Written Communication, Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking, and Ethics and Social Responsibility)
