Graduation date: 1997The timber shortage in the Pacific Northwest is forcing sawmill owners to\ud improve the competitiveness of their harvesting and processing\ud operations. A computer simulation and financial statement analysis were\ud used to compare the processing efficiency and profitability of three\ud bucking strategies: log cost minimization (traditional 40-foot preferred-length\ud logs); hauling length maximization (55-foot preferred-length logs);\ud and the Integrated Log Manufacturing system (ILM), a proposed\ud computer-based strategy that acts as a harvest-site merchandiser and integrates harvest-site tree bucking and lumber manufacturing.
