Graduate Recital in Guitar

Includes recorded audio files in WAV and MP3 formats, 1:03:40 in length.The program opens with three sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1751). Longo 483 was transcribed and edited for guitar by Frederick Noad while Longo 423 is the work of Carlos Barbosa-Lima. Longo 411 was selected and transcribed by the performer. The Theme Varie et Finale was composed in 1928 by Mexican composer Manuel Maria Ponce, (1882-1948). The theme and variations are marked Andante un poco mosso, Allegro appassionato, Molto moderato, Allegro moderato, Agitato, Vivace and Molto piu lento. The Finale is marked Vivo scherzando. Tastar de Corde is the work of Kenneth De Vito (b.1952). The piece was premiered at CSUN in fall, 1980 by the performer of this recital who also performed it the following year at a new music concert in UCLA???s Schoenberg Hall. Fandanguillo by Federico Moreno-Torroba, (b.1891), was composed in 1926 and is part of the Suite Castellana. The Minuetto by Enrique Granados, (1867-1916), and Sevilla by Isaac Albenize, (1860-1909), are both piano pieces from larger works that are here transcribed for guitar by Manuel Barrueco. The Fantasia para un Gentilhombre by Joaquin Rodrigo, (b.1902), was written in 1954 for Andres Segovia. Rodrigo based the piece on themes by Gaspar Sanz that are found in the Instruccion de musica sobre la guitarra espanola, (Saragosa, 1674). Rodrigo says of the work, ???My ideal was that if Sanz could hear this work he would say, ???while it isn???t exactly me, I can recognize myself.?????? The ordering of this program is based on genre, musical variety and the relative weight of each composition
