The East Bay Japanese American basketball community : a look at community culture

For almost a century basketball has been a part of Japanese American\ud community culture. Teams, organizations, and leagues founded as early as\ud the 1920s have persisted over generations and continue to provide activity,\ud recreation, and a sense of community and culture to all of those involved. By\ud studying the history and current state of Japanese American basketball\ud leagues in relation with the organizations with which they are affiliated within\ud the greater context of Japanese American history using a cross disciplinary\ud ethnic studies approach, I will be able to contribute another perspective of the\ud ever changing and evolving Japanese American community and how they\ud ???imagine??? their community to be. The purpose is to look at Japanese\ud American basketball on a more discursive level and gain insight of its current\ud and future status in juxtaposition with the rest of the Japanese American\ud community and identity
