Literature survey and review of artificial intelligence applications in engineering design

Includes bibliographical references (pages 87-89)The goal of this project is to review artificial\ud intelligence/expert systems applications in engineering\ud design. Applications of expert systems to mechanical\ud engineering design are emphasized.\ud The report introduces the subject of artificial\ud Intelligence (AI). Basic elements and application areas of\ud AI are described. Then, expert systems (ES) are defined,\ud and characteristics, components and examples of ES are\ud presented. Characteristics of engineering design process\ud are reviewed, and ways in which the engineering design\ud can be helped by ES applications are discussed. Four\ud specific papers on applications of ES to design are\ud analyzed in some detail.\ud Although AI/ES has great potential for applications to\ud engineering design it is not now possible to routinely use\ud these as design tools. Future hardware and software\ud developments are required to make AI/ES routinely available\ud to the design engineer
