AFRAS 421 studies major social science literature and other phenomena of the international Black urban experience. Greater attention is given to the Black urban experience of the United States, since what happens here often determines or greatly influences the social, economic, and political plight, as well as cultural constructions, of Africana people around the world. In particular, this course focuses on the many ways that Black urban dwellers have experienced oppression and marginalization in some of the most basic areas that are necessary for productive and healthy living. Crucial to understanding this second-class citizenship is a consideration of racism and discrimination (based upon race, class, and gender)
