The big compromise : (death of a paper doll)

Includes bibliographical references (pages #-#)The present body of work is a series of paintings that, like a page from a diary, tell part of the continuing story of my life. The death of the paper doll occured as a result of the continued compromises confrunted in a materialistic society. In a previous series of works the outside shape of each painting was that of a figure of a paper doll which came to be encrusted with and, eventually, replaced by the various collage shapes (that symbolize materialism) which have now become embodied in the zigzag shape of the present work.\ud The outside shape of the present body of paintings, and the shapes of the collage pieces within, are used as symbols to tell my story. Symbols such as the zigzag itself, letters, car, heart, arrow, etc. are used to represent important events that have taken place in my life. Repetition of symbols represents the recurrence of events in life; and are randomly arranged just as events in life often appear to be. The painting's horizontal format relates to the linear sequence of life's events; whereas the up and down movement of the painting's zigzag shape symbolizes the highs and lows of emotion that often happen as a result of life's occurrences.
