Identification of a second-site suppresssor of CDC24 in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

Cdc24 protein in Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission yeast) is a novel\ud protein that is involved in maintaining genome stability. Even though the\ud exact function of this protein is unknown it has been implicated in DNA\ud replication, DNA repair, telomere maintenance and sister chromatid\ud cohesion. At the restrictive temperature, cdc24 cells arrest in S phase,\ud exhibit chromosome breakage and have reduced cell viability. As in other\ud cdc mutants, cdc24 mutants also have an elongated morphological\ud phenotype at the restrictive temperature. I have isolated two genetic\ud suppressors, cscl and csc2 of cdc24 that suppresses the cdc24-Gl\ud temperature sensitive phenotype: in the presence of these suppressors, the\ud mutant cdc24 can form colonies at 34??C. The genetic suppressors have a\ud cold sensitive phenotype, which is not suppressed by cdc24. Identifying new\ud genetic interactions will help provide insight into the elusive role of cdc24 in\ud S. pombe
