Health promotion at the worksite : A needs assessment

Includes bibliographical references (pages 62-64)The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the\ud health promotion needs of a selected group of employees residing\ud in Ventura County. Using an extensive literature review as a\ud background and working closely with the Ventura County Health\ud Promotion Center Staff, a survey instrument was constructed.\ud The instrument contained twenty-five items using a multiple\ud choice format. Following pretesting and revision, the instrument\ud was administered to a selected sample of 210 aerospace employees.\ud One hundred and one useable questionnaires were obtained for the\ud study.\ud Questionnaire response data was coded and mean frequencies,\ud statistics, and cross-tabulations were obtained using the Statistical\ud Package for the Social Sciences. Data was tabulated and analyzed.\ud The analysis of the data indicated that:\ud 1) Employees at the selected site were interested in\ud exercise, weight loss, high blood pressure, cancer\ud prevention and C.P.R. health promotion activities.\ud 2) The most common observed worksite health problems\ud were smoking, overweight, stress, high blood\ud pressure, and back problems.\ud 3) Those employees who had taken a health-related\ud class were more likely to be interested in health\ud promotion at the worksite.\ud 4) Employees with some college were most likely to\ud be interested in health promotion, employees with\ud post-graduate studies were the least likely to\ud be interested in health promotion at the worksite.\ud This study demonstrated that a health promotion needs\ud assessment could be easily administered at a worksite considering\ud a health promotion program
