Includes bibliographical references (pages 74-75)Using leased telephone lines, we form a distributed network of terminals connected to a central computer. Combining several low speed terminals onto a concentrator utilizing a high speed telephone line, can significantly reduce the telephone line lease costs. Several algorithms exist which can optimize the topological configuration of a point-to-point network by strategically locating high speed data multiplexors for a given set of terminals. In reality, a network topology is constantly changing and it would be economically undesirable to reconfigure a network to its optimal configuration for every change in the network.
