Presented at the 7th Biennial Conference on University Education in Natural Resources, March 13-15, 2008, Corvallis, Oregon.Getting through the tenure process can be extremely difficult. It is often difficult to know the right questions to ask or even to whom the questions should be addressed. In 2004, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University started a faculty mentoring program. The vast majority of positions at Cal Poly are 100% teaching appointments, so much of the tenure process is based on teaching. In this program, non-tenured faculty members are paired with more senior tenured faculty. The mentoring program is completely separate from the tenure and promotion process....
