Adaptation of Korean ceremonial dress into American dress styles

Includes bibliographical references (pages 59-60)Five garments were adapted into modern American\ud styles from traditional Korean women's ceremonial garments\ud by draping them on a dress form. A questionnaire was\ud utilized to obtain Caucasian and Korean women's opinions\ud about traditional Korean women's ceremonial garments and\ud the derived garments. A collection of five garments with\ud the questionnaires was presented to women who lived in Los\ud Angeles and were members of Korean Protestant churches or\ud the Presbyterian Church in Encino. The garments designed\ud varied in style from day dresses to formal evening wear.\ud The women viewing and wearing the garments responded to\ud the questionnaire during the modeling of the dresses.\ud A higher percentage of Korean than Caucasian women\ud preferred these dresses. Caucasian women preferred the\ud color of the garments and the Korean women preferred the\ud style of the garments. The garment to which both sets of \ud women responded most favorably was the blue silk one\ud adapted from the queen's ordinary clothes.\ud There was a significant difference between the\ud numbers of Caucasian and Korean women who had worn Korean\ud ceremonial costumes previously. There was no significant\ud difference in preference among the Korean women who had\ud lived in the United States for different lengths of time.\ud It was concluded that there is a need for dresses\ud specifically designed for Korean women and that clothing\ud manufacturers and pattern companies should be made aware\ud of this need
