Ethnic identity, parents' ethnic socialization and ethnic peer choice among biracial and multiracial adults

During adolescence, concerns relating to ethnicity shift from learning about ethnic labels\ud to understanding the significance of group membership and cultural traditions. The ability\ud to form an ethnically diverse friendship network enhances success in an ethnically diverse society. The purpose of this study was to explore if ethnic identity and parents??? ethnic socialization affect biracial and multiracial adolescents ethnic peer choice in the same manner as monoracials. A total of 99 participants completed a survey that included measures on ethnic identity, ethnic socialization and ethnic peer choice. A positive relationship was found between ethnic identity and ethnic socialization to the importance of having friends with the same ethnic background. It was also found that most of the participants nominated peers from the same ethnic group they identified with. It is important to further understand the factors that influence the relationship between ethnic identity, ethnic socialization and ethnic peer choice among biracials and multiracials because they struggle to follow various sets of cultural rules
