The Hangout League follows a team of kid mystery solvers through their maturation from\ud children to adults, with mystery solving used as a metaphor for the alternative forms of\ud engagement missing in the lives of children with different educational needs. The work uses this concept and other elements familiar to young adult fiction, as well as the form as a young adult children's novel itself, to comment on the way our story telling influences our education and causes us to suffer. It argues that a belief in individualism and our own uniqueness must be replaced by a sense of ourselves as elements of larger, dynamic communities, independent of the influence of institutions
