Includes bibliographical references (pages 38-40)The purpose of this thesis is to heighten the reader's awareness to the functions, uses, and meanings that humor can serve ln the psychotherapeutic setting. This thesis also serves to add information concerning humor to an area of psychological research that is sparse and it strives to lighten the dominant psychological attitude that considers humor to be a hazardous or undesireable element in psychotherapy. The many functions, uses and meanings of humor are described and discussed, and several cautions in the use of humor are examined as they might occur in the psychotherapeutic setting. Suggestions for future research are also mentioned
