Combined methods: Flipped classroom and Peer instruction as Mathematics teaching facilitators

Este trabalho trata do uso da combinação de duas metodologias ativas de aprendizagem: a Sala de Aula Invertida e o Peer Instruction para o ensino de matemática no ensino médio, considerando como problema a dificuldade de aprendizagem dos alunos em prosseguir os estudos da matemática no ensino médio, em virtude da defasagem de aprendizagem na disciplina em séries anteriores. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o uso dos métodos de forma combinada: a Sala de Aula Invertida e a Peer Instruction, durante as aulas de matemática para alunos do 2° ano do ensino médio, como possibilidade de abordagem de conteúdos pelo professor de forma interativa, tornando os alunos agentes e participativos no processo de aprendizagem. A Sala de Aula Invertida consiste em inverter a dinâmica da aula dos alunos; ou seja, eles fazem em casa o que tradicionalmente realizam em sala de aula e em sala de aula realizam as atividades que eram feitas em casa. Enquanto a Peer Instruction consiste na resolução de exercícios pelos alunos em sala de aula, após a apresentação de uma questão pelo professor. Primeiramente, eles a resolvem individualmente. Dependendo do resultado (percentual de acertos da sala), discutem a resolução da questão em grupo. Na abordagem dos métodos de forma combinada, o processo de avaliação e feedback são imediatos durante as aulas de Peer Instruction. Os resultados quantitativos mostram que a combinação dos métodos tem impactos positivos sobre a aprendizagem dos alunos, demonstrados a partir das avaliações e análises estatísticas. Quanto à interação e participação em sala de aula e em casa, demonstram que os alunos se motivam e participam ativamente das aulas, e gradativamente aprendem a trabalhar em grupos melhorando assim o relacionamento e a ajuda entre eles. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho sugerem que ambos os métodos - a Sala de Aula Invertida e a Peer Instruction - podem ser aplicados de forma combinada, e seus resultados demonstram ganhos de aprendizagem, melhoria no relacionamento interpessoal e dinamismo das aulas, além de estar em sintonia com o estilo de vida dos alunos atuais e as novas tecnologias de informação utilizadas como facilitadoras de ensino.This work addresses the use of a combination of two active learning methodologies as follows: Flipped classroom and Peer instruction for teaching Mathematics in Secondary school, considering the students` learning difficulties when following their studies of Mathematics in Secondary school due to a learning discrepancy in previous lower grades. The objective of this work is investigate the combined use of these two methods. Taking both Flipped classroom and Peer instruction during Mathematics classes to second grade students of secondary school as a possibility of a teacher approaching content in an interactive way thus making students active and agent players in the learning process. The Flipped classroom consists in reversing the dynamics of the students` class, that is, they do at home what was traditionally done in class and do in class what was traditionally done at home. While Peer instruction consists in students resolving exercises proposed by the teacher in groups and after that the same students resolve the exercises individually and, depending on the result (the percentage of correct exercises in class) they resolve the question in group. when the approach uses both methods combined, the feedback and the evaluation system are immediate during the Peer instruction`s class. The quantitative results show that the combination of the two methods has positive impacts on the students` learning, which is verifiable through evaluations and statistical analysis. As for the interaction and participation both in class and at home, the combined methods show that students get motivated and participate actively in the classes and gradually learn how to work in groups thus improving their relationship and mutual help. The results obtained from this work suggest that both methods - Flipped classroom and Peer instruction - combined can be applied and their results present continuous learning improvement, boost interpersonal relationship and class dynamics besides being connected to today`s students` life style and new information technologies used as teaching facilitators
