Past is present

Includes bibliographical references (page 12)PREFACE\ud The continuum of time has been a constant preoccupation of humankind. The opening verse of Ecclesiastes reads:\ud The earth abideth forever; and there is no new thing under the sun.\ud Aristotle writes:\ud Since the "now" is an end and a beginning of time, not of the same time, however, but the end of that which is past and the beginning of that which is to come, it follows that, as the circle has convexity and its concavity in a sense, in the same thing, so time is always at a beginning or at an end.\ud T. S. Eliot in the 20th Century expresses it:\ud Time present and time past \ud Are both perhaps present in time future\ud and time future contained in time past\ud If all time is eternally present\ud All time is unredeemable.\ud The mysteries of time and human existence have absorbed my interest for many years. During the master's program my interest began to focus: how could I express these ideas as an art form? A series of screen prints, translating visually the oneness of time could be created by an odyssey into man's past, including a photographic exploration of ancient ruins. Symbols of the life cycle, birth, growth, and decay could be interrelated to synthesize time and human life.\ud This paper will describe the content of the resulting prints. The subject matter is architecture eroded by time interwoven with symbols of life. The process by which the perceived world was altered to express the continuum of time will be explained. The choice of the media and aesthetic considerations, integral to the philosophic theme will be examined. Lastly, imagery in terms of Surrealism will be analyzed
