Managing data in mobile contexts using smartphones and digital pen

The purpose of this research is to build a notetaking system that supports the three tenets of presence, editability and linkability while preserving paper-based interaction\ud specifically in mobile contexts. To this end, we created PocketPad, an information management system geared toward university students that is designed to support the capture, storage, browsing, editing and organization of handwritten notes. Through the combined use of different hardware components, we built a synchronization component that bridges the paper-electronic information divide in mobile contexts. PocketPad is designed via the complementary use of digital pens to capture information, smartphones to browse and store prior information, and digital pens and smartphones in combination to edit and organize information. We validated PocketPad using a twenty-four student, first-use evaluation to gauge users??? first impressions of our system. This evaluation shows that participants found PocketPad to be useful overall, particularly in the areas of browsing, storing and studying of notes, and would use our system often to address their notetaking needs
