Beyond Catechesis: Popular Education with Children and Adolescents in Liberation Christianity

For this, a temporal cross section was applied, between the years 1968 and 1984. This way of living the Christian faith in Brazil, in a context of military dictatorship, contributed significantly to the Brazilian political culture through liberating educational practices in small grassroots groups. However, the narratives and investigations in this regard reveal the production of very little literature in relation to the juvenile public. Even after more than fifty years of contributions to this libertarian Christianity and popular education practices of the Movement of Adolescents and Children (MAC), there is a great absence in this regard, despite the birth and evolution of this Movement occurred in close relations with the Ecclesial Base Communities (CEBs) and the Social Pastoral ministries. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate the origins and peculiarities of popular education with children and adolescents in liberation Christianity and how it came about. For this, the qualitative methodical procedures of analysis of abundant documentary sources (from the archives of the National Secretariat of the MAC and personal archives) were used and analyzes of interviews (life stories) with people who participated in such activities during the period in question, either as children / adolescents, or as an educator. Such sources were compared, opposed and brought to dialogue with each other. Three main concepts guided this work: children / adolescents as socio-historical subjects (Walter Benjamin and Manuel Sarmento); liberation Christianity as a faith committed to the social emancipation of the oppressed (Michel Löwy); popular education as a political teaching-learning at the service of the consciousness raising of those suffering injustice and the motivation for the emancipatory struggle (Paulo Freire, Carlos Rodrigues Brandão, Luiz Eduardo Wanderley and Oscar Jara). Benjamin's understandings of history and Certau’s comprehension everyday micro-resistance also guided this work as they contributed to overcoming the adult-centric view that is prevalent in Western society. Finally, the encounters and disagreements of popular education with Catholic catechesis were also analyzed, and a minor, however expressive way of treating and conceiving childhood within the Christian hierarchical institutions, beyond its traditional doctrinal-catechetical teaching.O presente trabalho buscou responder a seguinte questão fundamental: como surgiu a educação popular com crianças e adolescentes no seio do cristianismo da libertação e quais foram suas práticas educativas? Para isso foi realizado um recorte temporal, entre os anos de 1968 a 1984. Tal forma de viver a fé cristã no Brasil, em um contexto de ditadura militar, contribuiu significativamente para com a cultura política brasileira, por meio de práticas educativas libertadoras em pequenos grupos de base. Contudo, as narrativas e investigações a esse respeito revelam a produção de uma literatura ínfima, em relação ao público infantojuvenil. Mesmo com mais de cinquenta anos de contribuições a este cristianismo libertário e de práticas de educação popular do Movimento de Adolescentes e Crianças (MAC), percebe-se uma grande ausência a esse respeito, ainda que o nascimento e a atuação desse Movimento tenham ocorrido em estreitas relações com as Comunidades Eclesiais e Base (CEBs) e as Pastorais Sociais. Portanto, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar as origens e peculiaridades da educação popular com crianças e adolescentes no cristianismo da libertação e como ela aconteceu. Para isso, foram utilizados procedimentos metodológicos qualitativos de análise sobre abundantes fontes documentais (dos arquivos da Secretaria Nacional do MAC e de arquivos pessoais) e análises sobre as entrevistas (histórias de vida) com pessoas que participaram de tais atividades, no período em questão, seja como crianças/adolescentes, ou como educador/a. Tais fontes foram comparadas, contrapostas e colocadas para dialogar. Os principais conceitos que guiaram o trabalho são os de criança/adolescente como sujeitos sócio-históricos (Walter Benjamin e Manuel Sarmento); de cristianismo da libertação, como uma fé comprometida com a emancipação social dos oprimidos (Michel Löwy); e de educação popular, como um ensino-aprendizagem político a serviço da conscientização dos injustiçados e da motivação para a luta emancipatória (Paulo Freire, Carlos Rodrigues Brandão, Luiz Eduardo Wanderley e Oscar Jara). As compreensões benjaminianas de história e certeaunianas de microrresistências cotidianas também balizaram este trabalho, uma vez que contribuíram para ultrapassar a visão adultocêntrica, predominante na sociedade ocidental. Por fim, também foram analisados os encontros e desencontros da educação popular com a catequese católica, percebendo-se uma minoritária, todavia expressiva forma de tratar e conceber a infância no interior das instituições hierárquicas cristãs, para além do seu tradicional ensino doutrináriocatequétic
