The mental health status of Asian American students at Fresno State.

A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Services California State University, Fresno, December 2013.The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental health status among Asian American students attending California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) as compared to White, Hispanic, and African American college students. Secondary data, collected from American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment II (ACHA-NCHAII) survey in the spring semester of 2011, were analyzed in this study. Asian American college students have an equally high rate of mental-health symptoms as students from other ethnic groups. More than 80% of Asian American students reported at least one mental-health symptom at any time within the last 12 months. Findings from this study suggest there were statistically significant differences in self-injurious behaviors among ethnic groups. Asian American college students were more likely to intentionally injure themselves compared to White, Hispanic, and African American college students. This study also found that Asian American college students were less likely to use mental-health services than students from any other ethnic group.Thesis (M.A.) - California State University, Fresno, 2013
