California State University, Northridge, credential for learning handicapped compared with programs of selected states

Includes bibliographical references (pages 44-49)The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between criteria for a learning disabilities credential from California State University, Northridge and 20 selected states in the United States.\ud It was hypothesized that requirements between the 20 selected states and California State University, Northridge would differ in the 10 areas believed to be significant for a credential to teach children with learning disorders. Areas of comparison were: Master's degree, recommendation of preparing university, valid teacher's credential, number of units above Bachelor's degree, clinical/field experience, practice teaching, previous teaching experience, tests, specialized courses, and certain competencies.\ud Requirements from 20 selected states in the United States were received and reported in tabular form. The 1974 California State University, Northridge Guidelines and Standards were tabulated to compare the differences in the areas believed to be critical for a learning handicapped credential.\ud The findings appear to support the hypotheses. Research indicates a trend toward a rapid buildup of guidelines and standards being prepared by universities and State Departments of Education for credentials in learning disorders. Data indicate a lack of uniformity between states and constituent university programs. Further study is essential to provide valuable information to encourage special education departments and universities to revise and improve present Special Education Codes to promote highly trained and qualified personnel in the field of learning disabilities
