Includes bibliographical references (pages 61-71)Studies demonstrating the failure of the coliform group to meet recommended criteria for indicator organisms point out the need for alternate methods of estimating pollution levels. This study was undertaken in the laboratory to determine the survival, growth, and die-off of total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci in raw (unfiltered) and filtered water from the Simi Arroyo, Simi Valley, California. Environments in which a single indicator organism was added to filtered and raw water and in which all three organisms were added to filtered and unfiltered water were analyzed. Fecal streptococci show no appreciable after growth under all experimental conditions and are thus sugge...
