Two infrared missile effectiveness simulations

Includes bibliographical references (page 55)This project is divided into two chapters. Each chapter considers the role of a digital simulation of an infrared (IR) missile in establishing optimum power level criteria for countermeasure devices.\ud In the first chapter, the use of digital simulation in generating plots of various aerodynamic parameters of the IR missile is described. Also, some sample plots are shown and discussed. These plots were made for the purpose of validating a hybrid simulation of the missile. This hybrid simulation was used in conducting an effectiveness study of several counter-measure devices against the heat-seeking IR missile. \ud The second chapter of this project is concerned with a digital simulation of missile/target aircraft encounters. This simulation was performed in order to obtain information about the probability of aircraft survival as a function of the distance the missile misses the aircraft. This information was used in establishing effectiveness criteria based on miss distances for testing countermeasure devices in the hybrid simulation laboratory. Under this criteria, the countermeasure device is considered effective if it causes the simulated missile to miss the aircraft by a distance that insures a high probability of aircraft survival.
