Fluidodynamic study of H2 detachment in an electrolytic cell using the CFX computational application.

O desprendimento e a evolução destas bolhas influenciam na hidrodinâmica dos reatores, muitas vezes, melhorando a transferência de massa entre o eletrodo e a solução eletrolítica. Consequentemente, devido a emissão destes gases, o comportamento hidrodinâmico em reatores eletroquímicos e, geralmente, complexo representando um campo extremamente amplo para pesquisas. O principal objetivo deste trabalho e estudar um sistema bifásico (gás-liquido) a fim de prever a influencia do desprendimento das bolhas de hidrogênio, geradas eletroquimicamente no interior da semi-célula catódica, geometria eletroquímica de bancada, disponível no Laboratório de Engenharia Eletroquímica da UFCG/CC T7DEQ. No entanto, para este estudo, adotou-se a hipótese de gás injetado no interior da semi célula a partir de toda a superfície catódica. Com esta hipótese, foi possível estudar e analisar numericamente o comportamento hidrodinâmico das bolhas de hidrogênio no interior do domínio de estudo, aplicado-se os conceitos de fluidodinâmica computacional a partir do CFX-4. Desta forma, visando levar em consideração os fenômenos da coalescência e da distribuição do diâmetro das bolhas, foi implementado o modelo MUSIG ("Multiple-size-group") a fim de estudar a hidrodinâmica dos fluidos no interior do compartimento catódico. Com a aplicação deste modelo, foi possível enfatizar o caráter tridimensional do escoamento da fase gasosa na semi-célula eletrolítica. Todavia, a fase liquida apresentou um comportamento ad verso do que se esperava, ou seja, não exibiu nenhuma influencia advinda do comportamento da fase gás. Outro fato a ser destacado e que a coalescência e a distribuição do diâmetro das bolhas de hidrogênio, nas condições aplicadas, não apresentou influência significativa no comportamento dos fluidos, embora o perfil da cortina de gás,gerada nas proximidades da superfície católica, tenha apresentado um comportamento semelhante ao observado na célula experimental. Assim, os resultados apresentados neste trabalho viabilizam novos caminhos para o estudo de geometrias do eletrodo que permitam o desprendimento das bolhas de hidrogênio com maior facilidade o que proporcionara uma redução do sobrepotencial do processo de produção de cloro-soda eletroquimicamente.Most electrochemical reactors present reactions, where gas leaks, which evolve in the system in the form of bubbles. The detachment and evolution of these bubbles influence the hydrodynamics of the reactors, often improving the mass transfer between the electrode and the electrolyte solution. Consequently, due to the emission of these gases, the hydrodynamic behavior in electrochemical reactors is generally complex representing an extremely broad field for research. The main objective of this work is to study a biphasic (gas-liquid) system in order to predict the influence of the electrochemically generated hydrogen bubbles detachment inside the cathodic semi-cell, bench electrochemical geometry, available at the Electrochemical Engineering Laboratory of UFCG / CC T7DEQ. However, for this study, we adopted the hypothesis of gas injected into the semi-cell from the entire cathodic surface. With this hypothesis, it was possible to study and numerically analyze the hydrodynamic behavior of hydrogen bubbles in the Within the field of study, the concepts of computational fluid dynamics were applied from the CFX-4. Thus, in order to take into consideration the phenomena of coalescence and bubble diameter distribution, the Multiple-size-group (MUSIG) model was implemented to study the hydrodynamics of cathodic compartment. With the application of this model, it was possible to emphasize the character dimensional flow of the gas phase in the electrolytic semi-cell. However, the phase showed a behavior that was in reverse of what was expected, that is, it did not exhibit no influence from gas phase behavior. Another fact to be highlighted is that coalescence and diameter distribution of hydrogen bubbles under the conditions applied, showed no significant influence on the behavior of the fluids, although the profile of the gas curtain, generated near the catholic surface, presented a behavior similar to that observed in the experimental cell. Thus, the results presented in this work enable new avenues for the study of electrode geometries that allow the detachment of hydrogen bubbles more easily, which will provide a reduction of the electrochemically chlorine-soda overpowering process
