Num sentido amplo, a discussão sobre os assentamentos rurais e entendida enquanto parte da questão agraria no capitalismo. São resgatados aspectos de algumas elaborações teóricas nas quais diferentes autores, por um lado, apontam o desaparecimento da pequena produção agrícola perante o avango das unidades empresariais e, por outro, interpretam a produção familiar como um sistema próprio, cuja existência corresponde a uma necessidade social. São mencionados estudos demonstrando que a produção agrícola baseada no trabalho do grupo familiar não da sinais de desaparecimento, ainda que assuma distintos graus de importância nas diversas regiões do mundo. Em se tratando particularmente do Maranhão, observa-se que o recente revigoramento da articulação entre a economia regional e a reprodução do capital em escala mundial implica uma redefinição das relações de posse e propriedade, em especial no que se refere a terra, com a desarticulação das formas preexistentes de organização da produção e o consequente acirramento dos conflitos entre pequenos agricultores e novos proprietários de terra. O surgimento e a disseminação dos assentamentos de reforma agraria mostram-se, entretanto, como uma resposta dos excluídos ao caráter concentrador do desenvolvimento capitalista. O assentamento Terra Bela, por sua vez, não só traduz o sentido de conquista da terra pelos trabalhadores como reúne condições favoráveis para seu crescimento, quer por sua localização relativamente as vias de transporte, quer pelas perspectivas abertas com a emancipação do município de Buriticupu. Contudo, a organização social e técnica da produção familiar tradicional, caso venha se manter no assentamento, pode representar decisivos entraves a consolidação da experiencia.It addresses the emergence of rural workers' settlements in the recent context of the Maranhão economy. In a broad sense, the discussion on rural settlements and understood as part of the agrarian question in the capitalism. Aspects of some theoretical elaborations are different authors, on the one hand, point to the disappearance of production in the face of the advance of business units and, on the other hand, interpret family production as a system of its own, whose existence corresponds to a social need. Studies are agricultural production based on the work of the family group does not show signs of disappearance, although it assumes different degrees of importance in the regions of the world. Particularly in the case of Maranhão, it is observed that the recent reinvigoration of the link between the regional economy and of world capital implies a redefinition of tenure relations and property, in particular with regard to land, with the disarticulation of pre-existing forms of production organization and the consequent conflicts between small farmers and new landowners. O emergence and the spread of agrarian reform settlements are shown, however, as a response of the excluded to the concentrative character of the development. The Terra Bela settlement, on the other hand, not only the sense of conquest of the land by workers as it favorable for its growth, or because of its location the open perspectives with the emancipation of the municipality of Buriticupu.
