Characterization of low density polyethylene / attapulgite composites and evaluation of the effects of the acid treatment of the load on the properties of the composite.

As propriedades avaliadas foram a resistência à tração, o módulo de flexão e a resistência ao impacto. Foram estudadas também a dureza e o grau de cristalinidade do polimero e seus compósitos. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que a atapulgita, devido ã sua constituição fibrosa, atuou como carga reforçante para o polietileno, o que foi comprovado pelo aumento na resistência à tração dos compósito com até 30%, em peso, de carga incorporada. Comparações feitas com compósitos de polietileno de baixa densidade, utilizando cargas como talco e carbonato de cálcio, classificadas como inertes, mostraram que apenas a dureza e a resistência ao impacto apresentaram um aumento, sendo que o compósito que apresentou maior energia absorvida no teste de impacto foi o de 20%, em peso, de carga (talco) incorporada. Estudou-se o efeito de tratamentos da atapulgita com os ácidos clorídrico e nítrico, e comprovou-se, após o tratamento, uma maior porosidade da carga e um aumento da resistência mecânica do compósito, atribuído ao fenómeno do "acoplamento mecânico" e maior adsorção física da carga ao polímero. O tratamento com ácido nítrico foi o que promoveu uma maior resistência mecânica aos compósitos, e o efeito da adição de cargas no polietileno mostrou que apenas para 10%, em peso, de carga incorporada houve aumento no grau de cristalinidade e que, para as demais percentagens (20 a 40%, em peso), as cargas agiram como inibidoras de cristalização.The mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene composites densities with different conventional fillers (talc and calcium carbonate) and unconventional (atapulgite treated with mineral acids and untreated), were studied. The evaluated properties were the tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength. The hardness and the degree of crystallinity of the polymer and its composites.
