The future no longer appears to be a principle fount of inspiration to modem artists. Maurice Rickard wrote: As we push into the seventies, the mechanisms of nostalgia work overtime; for the fear of looking forward, we look back. After- all, we have to look somewhere. Those who are older gaze back over the heads of the young ones to a dimly recollected world; it is a world that youth has pieced together from its debris - to make something that is new and strange to both". Graphic designs produced during the 1920 to 1930 era are of particular significance in this study. The successful reawakening of poster concepts and designs of that time, and their application to contemporary uses, is the purpose of the project.\ud Nostalgia is not by any means a new approach. It is woven through the history of art as far back as one cares to look. It surges and ebbs, probably influenced by the needs of people to make momentary comfort in the symbols of bright yesterdays; bright, least, in retrospect.\ud While the author did not personally witness the 1920s or 1930s, he strongly identifies with those years. The emotions evoked by that period of time cannot be fully explained, but the impact it has had on the approach taken to the art presented here certainly can be felt; the flavor of that era has hopefully been captured by using poster subjects that were used during that past time. Selection of the automobile, circa 1920 to 1930, as the fundamental subject was based on two considerations: 1) The artist has an intense interest in them, and 2) the automobile is distinctly time-dated; there is no mistaking the era to which it belongs.(See more in text.
