Vision training program pilot study : Sulphur Springs Union School District

Includes bibliographical references (pages 35-37)The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the efficacy of classroom vision training to improve academic performance in second grade pupils who have visual perception deficiencies and are poor readers.\ud Current research concerning the success of vision training for students is contradictory in it???s findings. Both significant positive results and no correlation between reading and visual perception training have been reported by researchers. (Frostig and Horne, 1964; Webb, 1971: Eaglemann and Brunner, 1969: Ginsburg and Hartwick, 1971; Hammill, 1972; Serwer, et al, 1973; and Kershner, 1974).\ud A vision specialist was employed by the Sulphur Springs Union School District to provide extensive in-service and for the development of sequential vision training manual.\ud All second grade students, at five elementary schools, were screened by the school psychologist. Those students who failed initial screening, by obtaining a score on the Bender Gestalt Test one year or more below their chronological age were then examined by a team of optometrists. The optometrists then screened the students to determine if they were severely deficient in visual perception skills. (See more in text
