People count : a photographic view of India and the work of the family planning programs

Includes bibliographical references (pages 177-178)Modern India, a human mosaic, is a blend of many peoples and cultures whose society is an ethnic diversity which is probably the most complex in the world.\ud The alarming rise of the population in India has been a problem of world-wide concern for many years, and, although much has been written about the efforts to curb the rising tide of humanity by the implementation of family planning programs, photographic treatment of the same subject has been minimal.\ud This thesis/project, a photojournalistic essay on the subject, is an attempt to fill this void by viewing the work of various family planning programs within the context of the social environment of India.\ud The things seen and recorded by the author are the basis for the project, a limited view perhaps, but one taking into consideration many of the limits imposed upon an outside observer by this complex, fascinating culture whose values and social relationships are often misunderstood, yet always present an absorbing spectacle
