Emotional experience while watching films

The aim of this investigation was to test spontaneous film clips in order to study the\ud emotional experience of 166 participants who were ethnically diverse and students at a\ud large university campus. The main hypotheses of this study were supported. We were\ud able to successfully identify 18 videos that elicit the target emotions of happiness,\ud sadness, disgust and fear more than any other emotion. For the first time in research on\ud emotion, our film set offers videos that successfully elicit fear without inducing any other\ud emotion. Some discrepancies occurred in eliciting sadness and disgust without eliciting\ud any other emotions, which was comparable to previous research findings (Gross &\ud Levenson, 1995; McHugo, Smith, & Lanzetta, 1982; Philippot, 1993). The practical\ud significance of our study is that we extend the range of film stimuli that are currently\ud available for use in psychological research by presenting video clips that are taken from\ud the daily life of lay people and not commercial blockbuster movies
