Different management systems for the watermelon crop

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorAiming to evaluate the watermelon crop (Citrullus lanatus L.) in different management systems, on an Ultisol in the Central Depression of RS, Brazil, an experiment was carried out during the agricultural year 2008/2009 with the Crimson Sweet cv. The climate of the area is subtropical humid "Cfa" without drought (Köeppen), with annual rainfall of 1382 mm. With experimental units of 48 m² and random blocks design with 4 repetitions, the following management systems were tested: conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT), NT chiseled with one chisel shank (NT1S), NT chiseled with two chisel shanks side by side (NT2S), NT chiseled with three chisel shanks side by side (NT3S), NT chiseled with four chisel shanks side by side (NT4S), NT chiseled with five chisel shanks side by side (NT5S); the chisel shanks were 0,35 m. The data were a nalysed by the Duncan test (P 6 kg), were determined fruits quality parameters (total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity), root superficial area and root system distribution in soil profile, perpendicular of the sowing line (30 and 60 days after sowing), using the program SIARCS® of EMBRAPA. Besides, were determined some soil physical properties after watermelon cycle (soil density, porosity, aggregation, resistance to penetration and instantaneous water infiltration rate). CT obtained the larger productivity (126 Mg ha-1), differing statisticaly of the other treatments. The medium weight and the fruits quality parameters were not affected by the soil management systems. The roots total area was increased with mobilization intensity and soil mobilized area, except for the treatment NT4S. In the treatment CT, the soil density didn't show difference in depth, but in the other treatments there was difference among the layer 0 0,05 m and the deepest layers. The largest macroporosity was found in the layer 0 0,10 m, while the resistance to the penetration in this same layer was smaller, what might have favored the roots largest concentration found in that layer. For the instantaneous water infiltration rate, measured in the sowing line, the largest values were found in the treatments NT3S and NT5S, differing of NT.Objetivando avaliar a cultura da melancia (Citrullus lanatus L.) em diferentes sistemas de cultivo, sobre um Argissolo Vermelho Distrófico arênico na Depressão Central do RS, foi desenvolvido um experimento durante o ano agrícola 2008/2009 com a cultivar Crimson Sweet. O clima da região é do tipo Cfa subtropical úmido sem estiagem (Köeppen), com precipitações médias anuais de 1382 mm. Em unidades experimentais de 48 m² e delineamento blocos ao acaso com 4 repetições, foram testados os seguintes sistemas de cultivo: preparo convencional (PC), plantio direto (PD), PD escarificado com uma haste de escarificador (PD1H), PD escarificado com duas hastes de escarificador lado a lado (PD2H), PD escarificado com três hastes de escarificador lado a lado (PD3H), PD escarificado com quatro hastes de escarificador lado a lado (PD4H), PD escarificado com cinco hastes de escarificador lado a lado (PD5H); as hastes do escarificador distanciaram-se entre si 0,35 m. Os dados foram comparados pelo teste de Duncan (P 6 kg), foram determinados parâmetros de qualidade dos frutos (sólidos solúveis totais, pH e acidez titulável), área superficial e distribuição do sistema radicular no perfil do solo perpendicular a linha de semeadura (30 e 60 dias após a semeadura) com auxílio do programa SIARCS® da EMBRAPA. Também foram determinadas algumas propriedades físicas do solo após o ciclo (densidade do solo, porosidade, agregação, resistência à penetração e taxa de infiltração instantânea de água). O PC obteve maior produtividade (126 Mg ha-1), diferenciando-se estatisticamente dos demais tratamentos. O peso médio e os parâmetros de qualidade dos frutos não foram afetados pelos sistemas de manejo do solo. A área total de raízes aumentou com a intensidade de mobilização e área mobilizada de solo, exceto para o tratamento PD4H. No tratamento PC a densidade do solo não mostrou diferença em profundidade, mas nos demais tratamentos houve diferença entre a camada 0 0,05 m e as camadas mais profundas. A maior macroporosidade foi encontrada na camada de 0 a 0,10 m em todos os tratamentos, enquanto que a resistência à penetração nesta mesma camada foi menor, o que pode ter favorecido a maior concentração de raízes encontrada nessa camada. Para a taxa de infiltração de água instantânea medida na linha de semeadura, os maiores valores foram encontrados nos tratamentos PD3H e PD5H, diferenciando-se do PD
