Time and eternity: the Paul Ricoeur's reading of book XI of the confessions of Agostinho

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESIn this study will discuss the relation between time and eternity in Book XI of the Augustine’s Confessions , based on the reading of Paul Ricoeur in Time and narrative . Time, for Augustine, is experienced internally from the movement of the soul as a distension. The meditation about time comes in conjunction with a discussion of eternity and the creation of the world. In turn, distension is understood by Paul Ricoeur as the moment when we intend to accomplish something, such as reading or even reciting a hymn, in which our intention expands on the words we intend to read or sing, some of which of them are in our expectation (those we have not yet read), others in attention, those we are reading, and still others in memory, when they have been read. It is intended to show that temporal experience and narrative - of life or events - form a circle that moves from the outer world into the human being through reflection; and so through the narrative one can experience eternity. Moreover, it is shown that, from the contrast between eternity and our temporal experience, language becomes a narrative.Trata-se do estudo da relação entre tempo e eternidade no Livro XI das Confissões de Agostinho, com base na leitura de Paul Ricoeur em Tempo e narrativa. O tempo, para Agostinho, é experienciado internamente a partir do movimento da alma, enquanto distensão. A meditação sobre o tempo vem em conjunto com uma discussão a respeito da eternidade e da criação do mundo. Por sua vez, a distensão é entendida, por Paul Ricoeur, como o momento em que pretendemos realizar algo, como a leitura ou mesmo recitação de um hino, em que nossa intenção se dilata sobre as palavras que pretendemos ler ou entoar, sendo que algumas delas se encontram em nossa expectativa (aquelas que ainda não lemos), outras na atenção, aquelas que estamos lendo, e outras ainda, na memória, quando já foram lidas. Pretende-se mostrar que a experiência temporal e a narrativa – da vida ou dos eventos –, formam um círculo que parte do mundo exterior para o interior do ser humano através da reflexão; e assim, pela narrativa, pode-se experimentar a eternidade. Além disso, mostra-se que, a partir do contraste entre a eternidade e a nossa experiência temporal, a linguagem se torna uma narrativa
