The corpus of this research are three textbooks of the 6º year from Basic School that are being used by the public schools in Santa Maria. Through this investigation, it was sought to find out: how the genre concept is approached on the teacher s guide in Portuguese language textbooks; how this concept is presented to the teacher, also, which theoretical framework supports reading and textual production.
