GENDER RELATIONS AND APPROPRIATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN FAMILY FARMING IN SANTA MARIA, RS:

The thesis was developed having as research problem the question of whether the information and communication technologies (ICTs) give rural women some kind of power. To answer this, the main objective was to analyze the appropriation of the ICTs in family farming in Santa Maria-RS from the gender relations. Because we believe that information regarding women is also information regarding men (SCOTT, 1995), the research involved rural women, family farmers and young sons and daughters, having the generation theme as a specific goal. For the collection and analysis of data the research used the Q methodology which has as characteristic the production of quali-quantitative data, it also avoids conditioned answers and minimizes the interference of the researcher in the collected data. For the collection of data six steps were accomplished: realization of three discussion groups with family farmers, rural women and rural youngsters; interview with six qualified informers linked to the thematic of family farming, elaboration of 32 assertions from the transcription and analysis of the interviews with the qualified informers; classification of the assertions by ten families of family farmers; the obtaining of factors from specific software and analysis of the results. The factors are groups of people that share similar answer patterns (HEGEDUS, 2005). In the research, which contemplated in whole, ten farmers, ten rural women and fifteen rural youngsters (ten girls and five boys), five factorial analysis were performed which sought to identify supposed gender and generation differences in the bonds established by ICTs. To understand how these bonds are established, we started from the social bonding approach by Muniz Sodré (2002). The thesis was structured in three chapters. Chapter 1 Methodological Aspects of the Research describes the methodological path; Chapter 2 Gender and Generation deals with the study on gender and generation in the rural environment and also brings the results of the first three steps of the research and Chapter 3 Information and Communication Technologies and Bonds contextualizes the advance of ICTs in Brazil, describes the families that participated in the classification of the assertions and also presents and analyses the factors obtained by this classification. The factors were synthesized with the denomination: New Bonds, Bonds in Question, Correct Bonds, Conflicting Bonds and Educational Bonds. The analysis of the factors verified that rural women are assuming a new role inside the rural family properties and also in the family nucleus, rejecting the legitimate role of subordination (BORDIEU, 2002). This empowerment is driven by the greater access to information by the ICTs, specially the cellular phone. Specifically in the case of rural youth, which in most of the visited families have access to ICTs such as computers and Internet connection, the empowerment parameters such as self-assurance and the ability to make decisions (CORDEIRO, 2010) are even more evident.A tese desenvolveu-se tendo como problema de pesquisa a questão se as tecnologias de informação (TICs) conferem algum tipo de empoderamento às mulheres rurais. Para respondê-la teve-se como objetivo principal analisar a apropriação das TICs na agricultura familiar de Santa Maria, RS, a partir das relações de gênero. Por entender-se que informação a respeito das mulheres é também informação a respeito dos homens (SCOTT, 1995), a pesquisa envolveu mulheres rurais, agricultores familiares e filhos e filhas jovens, tendo a temática da geração como um objeto específico. Para a coleta e análise dos dados a pesquisa utilizou a metodologia Q que tem como características a produção de dados quali-quantitativos, ademais de evitar respostas condicionadas e também minimizar a interferência do pesquisador nos dados coletados. Para a realização da coleta de dados foram cumpridas seis etapas: realização de três grupos de discussão com agricultores familiares, mulheres rurais e jovens rurais; entrevistas com seis informantes qualificados ligados à temática da agricultura familiar; elaboração de 32 assertivas a partir da transcrição e análise das entrevistas com os informantes qualificados; classificação das assertivas por dez famílias de agricultores familiares; obtenção de fatores a partir de software específico e análise dos resultados. Os fatores são grupos de pessoas que tem padrões de respostas em comum (HEGEDUS, 2005). Na pesquisa, que contemplou ao todo, dez agricultores, dez mulheres rurais e quinze jovens rurais (sendo dez meninas e cinco meninos), foram feitas cinco análises fatoriais que buscaram identificar supostas diferenças de gênero e geração nos vínculos estabelecidos por meio das TICs. Para compreender como os vínculos afetivos e produtivos são estabelecidos, partimos da abordagem de vinculação social de Muniz Sodré (2002). A tese foi estruturada em três capítulos. O Capítulo 1 Aspectos Metodológicos da Pesquisa descreve o percurso metodológico; o Capítulo 2 Gênero e Geração aborda os estudos de gênero e geração no meio rural e também traz os resultados das primeiras três fases da pesquisa e o Capítulo 3 Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação e Vínculos contextualiza o avanço das TICs no Brasil, descreve as famílias que participaram da classificação das assertivas e também apresenta e analisa os fatores obtidos por essa classificação. Os fatores foram sintetizados com as denominações de Novos Vínculos, Vínculos em Questão, Vínculos Corretos, Vínculos em Conflito e Vínculos Educativos. A análise dos fatores verificou que as mulheres rurais estão assumindo um novo papel dentro das propriedades rurais familiares e também no núcleo familiar, rejeitando o papel legitimado de subordinação (BOURDIEU, 2002). Esse empoderamento é impulsionado pelo maior acesso à informação por meio das TICs, especialmente o telefone celular. Especificamente no caso das jovens rurais, que na maioria das famílias visitadas possuem acesso à TICs como computador e conexão com a Internet, os parâmetros de empoderamento como autoconfiança e habilidade de tomar decisões (CORDEIRO, 2010) são ainda mais evidentes
