Subsidies for management of the natural regeneration of Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. in secondary forest, RS

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESCabralea canjerana (canjerana) is one of the most important species of the Decidual Seasonal Forest of Rio Grande do Sul. Although it has been much exploited in the past by the use of its wood or to clear areas for crops, due to the abandonment of agricultural areas, it is currently common to find young populations of canjerana with high density in secondary forest fragments, mainly under the canopy, by this specie to belong to the late secondary group. On this, the objectives of this work were to test the influence of the release technique on the growth of a population in a natural regeneration stage in a secondary forest in Silveira Martins, RS, to know the reasons why some plants presented buckling of the bole after the liberation and verify the morphological plasticity of the specie in different luminosities. In an area of 1925 m² were measured the total height and the diameter at 10 cm of the soil of all the plants of the specie. The release was carried out by means of a clear cut in an area of 750 m², where all species different than canjerana were eliminated. The variables diameter at 10 cm of soil and total height were measured annually for four years. In the last evaluation, were also measured the diameter and length of the crown, height of insertion of the branches and the plants were classified according to their sociological position (emergent and dominated). The periodic increment in diameter and height was higher in liberated plants, however, the release had a greater effect when carried out in plants up to 1 meter in height. Emerging trees showed greater diameter and height increments than dominated trees. The maintenance of the competition influenced the crowns of the trees, with not liberated trees presenting shorter and narrow canopies, increasing the area of the stem without branches. The liberation caused stem buckling in some trees, but these presented a capacity of reiteration after the pruning of conduction. The canjerana has morphmetric plasticity showed leaflets exposed to the highest luminosity with xeromorphic characteristics, such as leaf area reduction, greater limbus thickness and reduction of the leaflets dimentions. The chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid patterns were similar for all light conditions, evidencing also the physiological plasticity of the species and their ability to adapt to different light conditions.Cabralea canjerana (canjerana) é uma das espécies mais importantes da Floresta Estacional Decidual do Rio Grande do Sul. Embora tenha sido muito explorada no passado pelo seu uso ou para limpeza de áreas para lavouras, devido ao abandono das áreas agrícolas, atualmente é comum encontrar populações jovens de canjerana sob alta densidade em fragmentos florestais secundários, principalmente sob o dossel, pela espécie pertencer ao grupo das secundárias tardias. Diante disso, os objetivos deste trabalho foi testar a influência da técnica de liberação no crescimento de uma população em estágio de regeneração natural em uma floresta secundária em Silveira Martins, RS, conhecer os motivos porque algumas plantas apresentaram flambagem do fuste após a liberação e verificar a plasticidade morfológica da espécie em diferentes luminosidades. Em uma área de 1925 m² foram medidas a altura total e o diâmetro a 10 cm do solo de todas as plantas. A liberação foi realizada por meio de corte raso em uma área de 750 m², onde foram eliminadas todas as espécies diferentes à canjerana. As variáveis diâmetro a 10 cm do solo e altura foram mensuradas anualmente por quatro anos. Na última avaliação, foram mensuradas também as variáveis diâmetro e comprimento da copa, altura de inserção dos galhos e as plantas foram classificadas de acordo com a sua posição sociológica (emergentes e dominadas). O incremento periódico em diâmetro e altura foi superior em plantas liberadas, contudo, a liberação surte maior efeito quando realizada em plantas com até 1 metro de altura. Árvores emergentes apresentaram maiores incrementos que árvores dominadas. A manutenção da competição influenciou a copa das árvores, sendo que árvores não liberadas apresentaram copas mais curtas e estreitas, aumentando a proporção de fuste livre de galhos. A liberação causou flambagem do fuste em algumas árvores, porém estas apresentaram capacidade de reiteração após a poda de condução. A canjerana apresentou características xeromórficas nos folíolos expostos à maior luminosidade, como redução da área foliar, maior espessura do limbo e redução nas dimensões do folíolo. Os padrões de clorofilas a, b e carotenoides foram semelhantes para todas as condições de luz, evidenciando também a plasticidade fisiológica da espécie e sua capacidade de adaptação às diversas condições de luz
