Spatial and temporal variation of the phytoplankton community in a section of the Reservoir of Passo Real, RS, Brazil

Ceratium furcoides is a dinoflagellate of the genus Ceratium found in marine habitats but in recent years is being considered an invading organism in freshwater environments both in North and South America. This work aims to describe a profile of the phytoplankton community and the occurrence of C. furcoides in an annual cycle in the water column at Passo Real Reservoir, Quinze de Novembro, RS. Phytoplankton samples were collected from one sampling station in the reservoir (-28.744702°S, -53.139704°W) in the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn) and four times each day:at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m in four depths of the water column (sub-surface, depth of disappearance of the Secchi disk (d. secchi), limit of the euphotic zone and depth of 8 meters). A five litre Van Dorn bottle was used for water collection. Samples were concentrated in situ using a 25 μm mesh plankton net in amber flasks and preserved with 1% Lugol solution. The abiotic variables were measured in situ and in the laboratory with the aid of portable devices. The taxonomic identification of phytoplankton was performed using specialized bibliography. Phytoplankton quantification was performed in an inverted microscope. Migration of the phytoplankton community in the water column was observed during the study period. Cell density differed between depths, time of day and seasons. High temperatures in the water column were found as key factors causing intense blooms of the dinoflagellate C. furcoides.O fitoplâncton é uma comunidade de organismos microscópicos que possui grande importância ecológica e é adaptado a uma série de modificações ambientais. Ceratium furcoides (Levander) Langhans 1925 é um dinoflagelado pertencente ao gênero Ceratium, encontrado em habitats marinhos que, nos últimos anos, está sendo considerado um organismo invasor em ambientes de água doce na América do Norte e Sul. Este trabalho tem por objetivo descrever um perfil da comunidade fitoplanctônica e a ocorrência de C. furcoides em um ciclo anual na coluna d’água no Reservatório Passo Real, Quinze de Novembro, RS. As amostras do fitoplâncton foram coletadas em uma estação de amostragem no reservatório de Passo Real, (-28.744702°S, -53.139704°W). As coletas contemplaram quatro estações climáticas (Inverno, Primavera, Verão e Outono), compostas por quatro amostragens diurnas com início às 9h00min, 13h00min, 16h00min e 18h00min em quatro profundidades da coluna d’agua (sub-superfície, profundidade de desaparecimento do disco de Secchi (d. secchi), limite da zona eufótica e profundidade de 8 metros). Utilizou-se uma garrafa de Van Dorn de 5 L para coleta da água. As amostras foram concentradas in situ utilizando uma rede de plâncton de abertura de malha de 25 μm acondicionadas em frascos âmbar e preservadas com solução de Lugol a 1%. As variáveis abióticas foram medidas in situ e em laboratório com auxílio de aparelhos portáteis. A identificação taxonômica do fitoplâncton foi realizada utilizando bibliografia especializada. A quantificação do fitoplâncton foi realizada em microscópio invertido. Durante o período amostral houve uma grande migração da comunidade fitoplanctônica na coluna d’agua. As amostragens revelaram diferenças nas densidades de células entre profundidades, horários e estações climáticas. Pode-se perceber que temperaturas elevadas da coluna d’agua são fatores chaves para a proliferação em massa do dinoflagelado C. furcoides
