Relationship between growth strategies, photosynthesis and use of nitrogen and phosphorus for c4 native forage grasses of Southern Brazil

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESThe aim of this thesis is to evaluate different species of native grasses from southern Brazil grasslands of contrasting in its specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) traits, if species of higher SLA have greater assimilation of CO2, as well, its relation with leaf nitrogen (N) under natural fertility conditions and with N fertilizetion. In addition, a possible correlation between leaf and root attributes was tested. In order to determine if the species with contracting growth strategies are also contrasting in the concentration of P in the dry matter, relative growth rate (RGR), and to determine if the highest RGR is related to a higher capacity of P influx by plants, and with higher affinity transporters for P. In greenhouse studies, the thesis presents seven chapters. The first chapter is a review about factors that led to the formation of natural grasslands in South America, and the adaptive mechanisms of species to climate and soil conditions. The second chapter is about the relationship of leaf attributes, N concentration, CO2 assimilation and water use in photosynthesis was made with ten species and five replications, where the treatments were the species. The third chapter used eight species under conditions of natural fertility and N addition, was quantified the effect of fertilization with N on the photosynthesis and leaf area of the species. The fourth chapter, which has the same design as the second chapter, discusses the relationship between leaf and root attributes and brings a proposition of groups of species based on these attributes. The fifth chapter, which aimed to identify the effect of the variation of the availability of P on the consistency of the attributes of leaves and roots, was done with eight species and four replicates. The sixth chapter tested the relationship between the relative growth rate and the absorption capacity of P by two grasses with contrasting growth strategies. At the end, in the seventh chapter, the final considera-tions bring an approach about the correlation between the variables, with the proposed a conceptual model with the possible interactions. Our data indicates that the species of higher SLA and lower LDMC have a greater capacity of assimilation of CO2 and productivity of leaf N, as well as, they are species with greater ability to respond for leaf area to N fertilization, which leads to a higher rate of assimilation of CO2 with the use of fertilization. The pattern of dry matter (DM) allocation between shoot and root system presents the same pattern for the tested species, that is, species with larger leaf area per DM unit of leaves also produce larger surface area and root length per DM unit of root. In addition, the higher DM content of the leaves was positively correlated with the higher density of root tissue and greater root diameter. The species with higher RGR were characterized by the greater influx of P and by transporters of higher affinity, able to absorb P in lower con-centration in the soil.Esta tese teve o objetivo de avaliar em várias espécies de gramíneas nativas das pastagens da América do Sul contrastantes nos atributos área foliar especifica (AFE) e teor de matéria seca foliar (TMS), se espécies de maior AFE têm maior assimilação de CO2, bem como, relação com o nitrogênio (N) foliar em condições de fertilidade natural e como adubação com N. Além disso, foi testada a possível correlação entre os atributos foliares e radiculares, e se as espécies com estratégias de crescimento contratantes também são contrastantes na concentração de P na matéria seca, na taxa de crescimento relativo (TCR). Assim como, determinar se a maior TCR está relacionada com maior capacidade de influxo de P pelas plantas, e com transportadores de maior afinidade para o P. Em estudos realizados em casa de vegetação, a tese apresenta sete capítulos. O primeiro capítulo é uma revisão sobre fatores que levaram a formação das pastagens nativas na América do Sul, e sobre os mecanismos adaptativos das espécies ao clima e solo. O Segundo capítulo sobre a relação dos atributos foliares e concentração de N na assimilação de CO2 e uso de água na fotossíntese foi realizado com dez espécies e cinco repetições, onde os tratamentos foram as espécies. O terceiro capitulo usou oito espécies em condições de fertilidade natural e adição de N, e foi quantificado o efeito da adubação com N sobre a fotossíntese e área foliar das espécies. O quarto capitulo, que tem o mesmo delineamento do seundo aborda a relação entre atributos de folhas e raízes e traz uma proposição de grupos de espécies com base nesses atributos. O quinto capitulo, que visou identificar o efeito da variação da disponibilidade de P sobre a consistência dos atributos de folhas e raízes, foi feito com oito espécies e quatro repetições. O sexto capitulo testou a relação entre a taxa de crescimento relativo e a capacidade de absorção de P por duas gramíneas com estratégias de crescimento contrastantes. Ao final, no sétimo capítulo, as considerações finais trazem uma abordagem sobre a correlação entre as variáveis e com a proposto um modelo conceitual com as possíveis interações. Os dados dessa tese indicam que as espécies de maior AFE e menor TMS tem maior capacidade de assimilação de CO2 e produtividade do N foliar, bem como, são espécies com maior habilidade de responder a adubação com N na produção de área foliar, o que leva essas espécies a uma maior taxa de assimilação de CO2 com o uso da adubação. A alocação de matéria seca (MS) entre parte aérea e sistema radicular apresenta o mesmo padrão para as espécies testadas, ou seja, espécies de maior área foliar por unidade MS de folhas também produzem maior área superficial e comprimento de raízes por unidade MS de raiz. Além disso, o maior teor de MS das folhas foi positivamente correlacionado com a maior densidade de tecido radicular e maior diâmetro radicular. As espécies com maior TCR foram caracterizadas pelo maior influxo de P e por transportadores de maior afinidade, capazes de absorver em menores concentrações de P no solo
