Which reading strategy produces better comprehension results: directed reading thinking activity or literature circles?

Third grade students' reading comprehension was evaluated after using two\ud reading strategies; Directed Reading- Thinking Activity (DR-TA) and Literature\ud Circle groups. During the Directed Reading- Thinking Activity, students were\ud asked to predict, confirm, and revise predictions with teacher guidance. During\ud Literature Circles, students choose a book to read with several other students. In\ud doing so, students formed their own groups. Students read, completed role sheets,\ud and discussed sections of the reading as a group. Both strategies are studentcentered,\ud in that they both allow students to construct their own meaning and be\ud exposed to peer ideas. However, DR-TA is facilitated by the teacher, whereas\ud Literature Circles take place with only teacher monitoring. Following the reading\ud of each story, DR-TA and Literature Circles, students took a 10 question test.\ud Results of the tests were analyzed to determine which method produced better\ud comprehension scores
