Teachers of an inclusive school - an analysis of the relationship between the concept of person and the tolerant attitude

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorThe present research aims at investigating the relationship between the concept of person and the construction of a tolerant attitude, based on the conceptions of four teachers from a public elementary school, known as inclusive, in Santa Maria/RS, during 2003. The research line is practices in school and the methodological approach used was the qualitative one, presented as a case study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations of pedagogical practices. The analysis of the data consisted of a systematization of three general categories. After that, these categories were subdivided into units. The categories and their respective units are: 1. Choice for the Teaching Profession: lack of another option, profession or vocation; 2. Concept of person: feelings and intelligence; 3. Tolerance and Inclusive Education: respect facing the difference, limit and life experience. The review of literature consists of three chapters. In the first one the structural aspects of philosophical anthropology are introduced, focusing on the etymological and historical origin of the concept of person. The second chapter deals with general notions regarding tolerance. In the third chapter some historical aspects of Special Education are analyzed, as well as the challenges and possibilities to inclusive schooling today. The concluding remarks point out to a relation between the factors that motivated the choice for the Teaching Profession and the construction of a teacher s tolerant attitude in relation to the personal difference of each student.A presente pesquisa objetiva investigar a relação entre o conceito de pessoa e a construção de uma conduta tolerante, a partir das concepções de quatro professoras que atuam no ensino fundamental de uma escola pública, considerada inclusiva, na cidade de Santa Maria/RS, em 2003. A linha de pesquisa é formação de professores e a abordagem metodológica foi qualitativa, caracterizando-se como um estudo de caso. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas e observações das práticas pedagógicas. A análise dos dados foi realizada através da sistematização de três categorias gerais e, posteriormente, subdivididas em unidades. As categorias e suas respectivas unidades são: 1. Opção pelo magistério: falta de outra opção, profissão e vocação; 2. Concepção de pessoa: sentimentos e inteligência; 3. Tolerância e Educação Inclusiva: respeito à diferença, limite, experiência vivida. A revisão de literatura consta de três capítulos. No primeiro aparecem os aspectos estruturais de antropologia filosófica, com destaque para a origem etimológica e histórica da concepção de pessoa. O segundo capítulo versa sobre as noções gerais a respeito da tolerância. No terceiro capítulo estão alguns aspectos históricos da educação especial, bem como os desafios e possibilidades da inclusão escolar hoje. As considerações finais sinalizam para uma relação entre os fatores que motivaram a escolha pelo magistério e a construção de uma postura tolerante da professora em relação à diferença pessoal de cada aluno
