Precision agriculture in Brazil: conditioning factors, socioeconomic profile and perspectives

This research deals with the socioeconomic profile of Brazilian producers that adopt Precision Agriculture (PA), their levels of satisfaction with technology, the most employed techniques, the constraints to the adoption and dissemination, impacts on productivity, use of inputs and levels of management. It is an exploratory descriptive research, of opinion, with random sampling, where the sample consisted of 47 farmers of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), who grow soy, corn, wheat and irrigated rice, and 19 companies that operate in 11 Brazilian states. In the research, quantitative and qualitative data were used, analyzed through univariate and bivariate statistical methodology. The results indicated a majority age group between 40 and 50 years old with pre-school graduation and high school. The size of the property influences the adoption of the PA to the extent that, the relation of the adopters with the increased land distribution grows, as the size of the areas increases, indicating that bigger properties favor the use of this technology. The time of PA adoption is usually up to 6 years, with almost 50% of users, although the practice is known for more than three decades. The main ways in which farmers get to know the technology are fairs, exhibitions, comercial visits and other producers that serve as a reference. The cooperatives, universities and research bodies are mentioned as information, but their reach is limited. The most used techniques, other than autopilot, are those related to the improvement of fertility and acidity correction. The precise sowing of plants population adjusted in management or environmental zones is recent and in clear expansion and has the potential to grouw in a short time. The size of the sampling grid of predominant soil in Brazil is 3 ha, whereas in RS it is 1 ha. The increasing productivity, predominantly, is on the average around 10%, but very influenced by the intrinsic conditions of the area. The producers have shown a high level of satisfaction with the technology and service providers, materialized, on the intention to increase the areas. Among the benefits received are the improvement of the management and productivity. The main limiting factors for the adoption of PA are its cost, lack of skilled labor and support information, lack of specific public policies and the lack of communication infrastructure.Esta pesquisa aborda o perfil sócio econômico dos agricultores brasileiros que adotam a Agricultura de Precisão (AP), seus níveis de satisfação com a tecnologia, as técnicas mais empregadas, os condicionantes para a adoção e difusão, os impactos sobre a produtividade e uso de insumos e grau de gerenciamento. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória descritiva, de opinião, com amostragem aleatória, onde a amostra foi constituída por 47 agricultores do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), que cultivam soja, milho, trigo e arroz irrigado e 19 empresas Prestadoras de Serviço em AP, que atuam em 11 estados brasileiros. Na investigação, utilizaram-se dados quantitativos e qualitativos, analisados através de metodologia estatística univariada e bivariada. Os resultados reportados indicaram uma faixa etária predominante entre 40 e 50 anos com nível de escolaridade de ensino médio ou graduação. O tamanho da propriedade influencia na adoção da AP na medida que, percentualmente, a relação dos adotantes com a distribuição fundiária aumentada cresce, conforme aumenta o tamanho das áreas, indicando que as propriedades maiores favorecem a utilização da tecnologia. O tempo de adoção predominante da AP é de até 6 anos, com quase 50% dos usuários, embora já seja conhecida a mais de três décadas. As principais formas pelas quais os agricultores tomam conhecimento da tecnologia são feiras, exposições, visitas comerciais e outros agricultores que servem de referência. As cooperativas, universidades e os órgãos de pesquisa são citados como instituições mais confiáveis para informações, porém sua atuação é limitada. As técnicas mais utilizadas, exceto piloto automático, são as relacionadas à melhoria da fertilidade e correção da acidez. A semeadura precisa a taxa variável de sementes para ajuste de população de plantas por zonas de manejo ou ambiente é recente, porém possui potencial de grande expansão, em curto espaço de tempo. O tamanho da malha de amostragem de solo predominante no Brasil é 3 ha, enquanto no RS é de 1 ha. O incremento da produtividade, predominantemente, está na média em torno de 10%, porém muito influenciado pelas condições intrinsicas da área. Os agricultores demonstraram nível elevado de satisfação com a tecnologia e com os prestadores de serviço em AP, materializado pela intenção de aumentar as áreas. Entre os benefícios auferidos destacam-se a melhoria da gestão e da produtividade. Os principais fatores limitantes para a adoção da AP foi seu custo, a falta de mão de obra especializada e de informações de suporte, falta de políticas públicas específicas e a falta de infra-estrutura de comunicação
