Helminthes of ruminants: i. economic viability of anthelmintic treatment; ii. profile of the anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants

Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPqResistance of gastrointestinal nematodes is an emerging problem in ruminant production in Brazil and other regions of the world, and is largely related to deficits in productive indexes due to its effects on the welfare and health of these animals. However, some aspects such as the economic impact resulting from this problem, for example, still need further investigation. Thus, the aims of this study were: (1) to verify the cost / benefit of the treatment with different anthelmintic compounds in the productivity of naturally infected animals in extensive system farms of beef cattle with different nutritional strategies after weaning; (2) to evaluate nematode populations in cattle and sheep that share grazing areas before and after treatment with different anthelmintics, and to evaluate the efficacy of these treatments on naturally infected ruminants from seven different farms. Additionally, for groups of cattle and sheep treated with a benzimidazole, we investigated the presence of co-infections by Haemonchus through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluations. In Chapter 1, we evaluated the efficacy of five different anthelmintics and their relationship to the weight gain of calves under different diets after weaning by performing an economic analysis with the data obtained from 150 days of evaluation at four farms from Rio Grande do Sul state. In two of these properties, farms1 and 3, the most effective anthelmintic resulted in the highest financial return and in the others (farms 2 and 4) the ivermectin group 3.15% and control group, respectively, obtained the best results. In Chapter 2, we first evaluated six different anthelmintic compounds in the treatment of cattle and sheep and the nematode population present in these ruminants in shared grazing areas. The results obtained revealed a certain similarity both in the efficacy status of the products and in the helminths presents in these animals. In a second moment, we observed the presence of co-infection in cattle and sheep by Haemonchus species, especially in pre-treatment feces cultures, as well as the possibility of infection caused by hybrids of this parasite in one of the evaluated propertiesA resistência de nematódeos do trato gastrintestinal é um problema emergente dentro da produção de ruminantes no Brasil e outras regiões do mundo, sendo amplamente relacionada a déficits nos índices produtivos devido aos seus efeitos no bem-estar e saúde destes animais. No entanto, alguns aspectos como o impacto econômico decorrente desta problemática, por exemplo, ainda necessitam de maior investigação. Portanto, os objetivos deste estudo foram: (1) verificar a relação custo/benefício do tratamento com diferentes compostos anti-helmínticos na produtividade de animais naturalmente infectados em propriedades de sistema extensivo de criação de bovinos de corte com diferentes estratégias nutricionais após o desmame; (2) avaliar a população de nematódeos em bovinos e ovinos que compartilham áreas de pastejo antes e após o tratamento com diferentes anti-helmínticos, e avaliar a eficácia destes tratamentos nestas espécies de ruminantes em animais naturalmente infectados oriundos de sete propriedades. Adicionalmente, para os grupos de bovinos e ovinos tratados com um benzimidazole, investigar a presença de co-infecções por Haemonchus através de avaliações via reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). No Capítulo 1, avaliamos a eficácia de 5 anti-helmínticos diferentes e sua relação com o ganho de peso de terneiros sob regimes alimentares diferentes após o desmame, realizando uma análise econômica com os dados obtidos após 150 dias de avaliação em quatro propriedades do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Em duas destas fazendas, 1 e 3, o anti-helmíntico mais eficaz resultou no maior retorno financeiro e nas demais (propriedades 2 e 4) o grupo ivermectina 3.15% e grupo controle, respectivamente, obtiveram os melhores resultados. No Capítulo 2, primeiramente, avaliamos 6 compostos anti-helmínticos diferentes no tratamento de bovinos e ovinos e a população de nematódeos presentes nestes ruminantes em áreas de pastejo compartilhadas. Os resultados obtidos revelaram certa similaridade tanto nos status de eficácia dos produtos como nos helmintos infetando nestes animais. Em uma segunda etapa, através de PCR observamos a presença de co-infecção nos bovinos e ovinos por espécies de Haemonchus, principalmente nas culturas de fezes pré-tratamento, bem como a possibilidade da infecção causada por híbridos deste parasito em uma das propriedades avaliadas
