Factors that contribute to kindergarten math success

This study investigates the correlation between preschool attendance, age and success with the kindergarten math curriculum. The study was conducted with 44 kindergarten students in the 2007-2008 school year. Both qualitative and quantitative research, in the form of a district-created math assessment, parent surveys and teacher observations informed the research and confirmed the researchers predictions. In order to rate student age objectively, all students were given an age that correlates to their entrance in kindergarten. Ages in the class range from 4 years 10 months to 6 years 3 months. The data from the Kindergarten Primary Math Assessment was sorted by student age and preschool attendance and then analyzed. Students who attended preschool had an average score that was 74.5 points higher than those that did not attend preschool. Students who were 5 years 5 months to 5 years 11 months at\ud the start of kindergarten scored the highest on the Kindergarten Primary Math Assessment. These findings indicate the need for school districts in California to take a very close look at the kindergarten start date as well as a comprehensive preschool program for all students.
