Basic materials in music theory; a text-workbook for Junior High School instrumentalists

Includes bibliographical references (pages 84-85)The purpose of this workbook is to provide a systematic approach to learning the basics of music theory. The workbook will serve as both a resource for the music teacher and a course of study for the pupil who plays or is learning to play an instrument. It is specifically designed to be used in the 7th grade beginning instrument classes. This workbook uses a technique of instruction known as "programed learning." This particular approach to learning has gained widespread acceptance in recent years by both professional educators and psychologists. The subject matter of this text has been broken down into a series of very small, logical steps which lead systematically to an understanding of broad concepts. At each step the pupil will be learning new material by responding immediately to every question or statement presented in the text. Chapter I briefly describes the characteristics of programed instruction. The reasons for choosing this type of format for the workbook are given as they relate to the problems of class instrumental instruction. The various ways the workbook can be utilized at different levels of instruction are shown. Chapter II deals with the need for the workbook and the lack of published materials available. Chapter III describes how the workbook should be used by the pupil and some problems inherent to classroom use of programed instruction. Units I - VIII are the programed units which constitute the main body of this workbook
