Impact of microzooplankton granzing on the phytoplankton in the Patos Lagoon estuary

O impacto do pastoreio no crescimento e na biomassa do fitoplâncton foi quantificado em fevereiro de 1999 em duas enseadas rasas do estuário, Saco Justino (SJ) e Saco do Mendanha (SM), com menor e maior influência da entrada de águas marinhas, respectivamente, através de experimentos em laboratório (técnica da diluição). Em cada enseada foram coletados 10 l de água superficial e filtrados em rede malha de 150μm. Em laboratório, a água foi distribuída aleatoriamente em 12 frascos (500 ml), adotando-se os seguintes tratamentos: sem diluição e 75%, 50% e 25% de amostra natural diluída com água do local filtrada. Todos os tratamentos foram enriquecidos com nitrogênio e fósforo (N:P 15:1) e os experimentos foram realizados durante 48 h sob condições controladas de temperatura e luz. A densidade e a composição taxonômica do fitoplâncton e do protozooplâncton foram estimados na água do ambiente, juntamente com a salinidade e os teores de clorofila a e de nutrientes inorgânicos dissolvidos. O teor de clorofila a em cada frasco foi também estimado após 24 horas e 48 horas para determinar a taxa de crescimento líquido do fitoplâncton, e o dos nutrientes no final do experimento. No experimento do SM a relação entre a taxa de diluição e o crescimento líquido do fitoplâncton nas primeiras 24 h resultou em uma taxa de mortalidade (m) de 0,4 d-1 e de crescimento (μ) 1,3 d-1. Após 48 h, foi observado um leve aumento em m (0,6 d-1) e um decréscimo significativo em μ (0,5 d-1). No SJ não houve remoção de fitoplâncton nas primeiras 24 horas do experimento e após 48 h, m foi de 0,4 d-1 e μ de 0,6 d-1. Neste segundo dia no SM o impacto da herbivoria na remoção de fitoplâncton foi significativo, em torno de 40-60% da produção primária diária. Os principais organismos herbívoros foram ciliados (Strombidium sp. e outros) e dinoflagelados heterotróficos (Protoperidinium sp.) em ambos os ambientes, e dinoflagelados mixotróficos (Prorocentrum minimum) somente no SJ.We considered the hypothesis that phytoplankton biomass in summer is controlled by herbivory in the Patos Lagoon estuary. The impact of herbivorous grazing on phytoplankton growth and biomass was quantified in February 1999 using laboratory bioassays (dilution technique) and water of two shallow embayments, Saco do Justino (SJ) and Saco do Mendanha (SM), with low and high salt water influence, respectively. Surface water (10 liters) was filtered through a 150 μm mesh to remove large zooplankton. In the laboratory, 12 subsamples (500 ml) were distributed as follows: no dilution, 75%, 50% and 25% of natural water diluted with filtered water from the same source. Nitrogen and phosphorus (N:P 15:1) were added to all treatments and the experiments (48 hours) were conducted under light and temperature controlled conditions. Phytoplankton and protozooplankton density and taxonomic composition were determined in the natural sample together with salinity, the concentration of dissolved inorganic nutrients and of chlorophyll a. The latter was estimated in each sub-sample after 24 hours and 48 hours to estimate phytoplankton net growth rates while nutrients were estimated at the end of the experiment. In the SM experiment, phytoplankton mortality (m) in 24 hours was 0,4 d–1, together with highest values of phytoplankton growth μ (1,25 d-1). After 48 hours m increased slightly (0,6 d-1), and μshowed a significant decrease (0,5 d-1). In the SJ experiment no grazing effect was observed after 24 hours, and after 48 hours m was 0,4 d-1 and μ 0,58 d–1. The estimated grazing values represent a significant impact on phytoplankton, i.e. 40-60% of the daily summer primary production. In both areas, the main herbivores were ciliates (Strombidium sp. and others) and heterotrophic dinoflagellates (Protoperidinium sp.), while the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum was observed in SJ only
