Os crimes da rua do arvoredo. Versões e subversões em cães da província e canibais: paixão e morte na rua do arvoredo

E para piorar, acreditava-se que usaram as carnes das vítimas para fabricar linguiças e comercializá-las para a população local. Mas tão interessante quanto os detalhes desse fato bizarro são as constantes transformações pelas quais passam as inúmeras reapropriações e reescrituras ao longo dos anos a respeito desses crimes, chegando finalmente a contradizer em muitos aspectos a história “oficial”. Este é o caso dos romances Cães da Província (1987), de Luiz Antônio de Assis Brasil, e Canibais: paixão e morte na rua do Arvoredo (2004), de David Coimbra, que fornecem duas expressivas versões sobre o fato. Considerando esse evento macabro presente na memória coletiva dos porto-alegrenses, esta pesquisa tem por objetivo verificar de que forma o sombrio episódio denominado “Os crimes da rua do Arvoredo” é trabalhado nas narrativas ficcionais referenciadas, estabelecendo relações da história com a literatura.Who would imagine that in a small and provincial Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul capital city, in the exactly year of 1863, Jose Ramos and Catarina Palse, an apparently ordinary couple, living on the – so called – Arvoredo Street (currently known as Coronel Fernando Machado), were responsible for, coldly, exterminating many people. And, to make matters worse, it is believed that they used the flesh from their victims’ bodies to make sausages and sold them among the locals. However, as interesting as the intriguing details of this bizarre fact, are the constant transformations which all the several reappropriations and rewrites of these crimes have been submitted to along the years, reaching the point where they become controversial in many aspects to the “official” story. It seems to be the case of the novels Cães da Província (1987), by Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil, and Canibais: paixão e morte na rua do Arvoredo (2004), by David Coimbra, which deliver two expressive versions of what happened. Taking into consideration this macabre event, which still in the collective memory of people from Porto Alegre, this study has as its main purpose to verify how the dark episode named “The crimes of the Arvoredo Street” is seen in the referenced fictional narratives, considering the relationship between history and literature
