Age, growth and longevity of the hake, Urophycis cirrata, Goode & Bean, 1896, (Teleostei: Phycidae) in Southern Brazil

O ciclo anual de variação das percentagens mensais de bandas translúcidas e opacas nas bordas dos otólitos sagittae sugere, porém não conclusivamente, que ocorre a formação de uma banda translúcida e uma opaca por ano. O comprimento total (CT) e peso total (PT) máximos observados das fêmeas foram de 682 mm e 2305 g e dos machos de 466 mm e 859 g. As relações comprimento–peso diferiram significativamente entre sexos e foram PT fêmeas = 1,3 x 10-6 CT3,305 . PT machos = 3,0 x 10-6 CT3,157 e PT sexos agrupados = 1,2 x 10-6 CT 3,313 . As idades máximas observadas foram 14 anos para fêmeas e 7 anos para machos. As curvas de crescimento ajustadas pela equação de von Bertalanffy foram CT fêmeas = 698,9 (1 – e [-0,154 (t + 0,546)), CT machos = 507,3 (1 – e (-0,198(t + 0,788)) e CT sexos agrupados = 794,6 (1 – e (-0,108 (t + 1,035)). Os padrões de crescimento observados com as fêmeas atingindo maior tamanho e longevidade que os machos foram consistentes com os de outras espécies do gênero. Os coeficientes instantâneos de mortalidade natural (M), estimada com base na longevidade foram de 0,40 para os machos e 0,36 para as fêmeas.The age and growth of Urophycis cirrata, from the continental shelf and slope off southern Brazil were studied from sectioned sagittae otoliths of 345 specimens, most of which were caught in 1996 and 1997. The annual cycle of the monthly percentages of translucent and opaque zones in the border of the otoliths suggest, despite not conclusively, that a translucent and a opaque zone are formed each year. The oldest ages were 14 and 7 years for females and males respectively. The maximum total length (LT) and total weight (WT) for females were 682 mm and 2305 g and for males 466 mm and 859 g. The length-weight relationships differed between sexes and were: WT females = 1.3 x 10-6 LT3.304, WT males = 3,0 x 10-6 LT3.157 and WT both sexes = 1,2 x 10-6 LT3,313. Growth, expressed by the von Bertalanffy equation was LT females = 698,9 (1 – e [-0,154 (t + 0,546)), LT males = 507,3 (1 – e (-0,198(t + 0,788)) ; LT both sexes = 794,6 (1 – e (-0,108 (t + 1,035)). The growth and longevity pattern of U. cirrata with females attaining larger sizes and older ages than males were consistent with those observed for co-generic species. The natural mortality instantaneous coefficients (M) were estimated in 0.40 for males and 0.36 for females based in the observed longevities
