The film is dealt with as an artifact of industrial society, one which contains meanings and historical substance. Three sources will be the objects of study, used as tools that will make it possible to discuss the appropriation of individual memory converted into social memory. However, rather than being treated as memories, they will be treated as symbols of updating of the past. The sources are the personal letters exchanged between the Japanese officer Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the book Flags from our fathers (2000) written by American writer James Bradley and two movies: Flags from our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, both of them directed by Clint Eastwood and released in 2006. The study argues that historical filming, like the two analyzed, is always a piece of fiction which originates from a montage of past evidence. To conclude, the dissertation sustains that the three sources allow one to reread the past, valuing personal experiences and individual memories which constitute an outstanding, vast material for the mastering of cultural history.Este trabalho discutirá o cinema como um dos símbolos da Modernidade, um dos fenômenos da sociedade de massas e de consumo, identificando o cinema como portador de uma linguagem específica. Trata o filme como um artefato da sociedade industrial, mas um artefato portador de sentidos e de historicidade. Esta Dissertação utilizará três grandes fontes e objetos para discutir a apropriação da memória individual, convertida em memória social e em lugar de memória, tratadas como símbolos da presentificação do passado. As fontes serão a correspondência pessoal-familiar do militar japonês Tadamichi Kuribayashi, a obra A Conquista da Honra (2000), escrita pelo norte-americano James Bradley e duas peças fílmicas, A Conquista da Honra e Cartas de Iwo Jima, dirigidas por Clint Eastwood, lançadas em 2006. O trabalho sustenta que o filme histórico, como são históricos os dois filmes indicados de Clint Eastwood, é sempre um filme ficcional, partindo de uma montagem das evidências do passado. O trabalho quer concluir que as três fontes permitem reler a história, valorizando as memórias e experiências individuais, um rico material para o domínio da História Cultural
