We analyze the experience of creation and development of the API, which has as its key strategy to vertically integrate production of the farmers involved, checking their progress and weaknesses. It discusses also the sustainability of the experience, in view of the low capacity of survival that, in general, the aquaculture family managed through collective arrangements have demonstrated.O trabalho trata do potencial e as perspectivas de soluções cooperativas, baseadas em estratégias de agregação de valor, para o desenvolvimento da aquicultura familiar, a partir de um estudo do caso da Associação de Aqüicultura e Pesca de Itumbiara-Go (API). Avalia-se a experiência de criação e desenvolvimento da API, que tem como estratégia chave a verticalização da produção dos piscicultores associados, verificando seus avanços e fragilidades.
